Students from Union of Campus Journalists (UCJ), University of Ibadan, paid a visit to the head office of TheCable, Nigeria’s independent online newspaper, at Alausa, Lagos.
The students, who were led by Martins Isaac, president of the UCJ, said their visit to the team at TheCable was to maintain the existing relationship between the union and the newspaper.
As campus journalists leading the University of Ibadan at a challenging time in the history of the school’s students union, Isaac expressed the need to do the kind of journalism that drives development and social change within the Nigerian society.
They shared their challenges with the team at TheCable and got valuable advice on how to navigate the uncertain terrain of journalism, in and out of the walls of the university.

The students were received by Basirat Mohammed, client service executive, alongside Mayowa Tijani and Seyi Awojulugbe, who are both alumni of the UCJ.
“The Union of Campus Journalist (UCJ) was founded in 1987, and has successfully produced 32 presidents and thousands of campus journalists and influential pillars of society,” Isaac said when the team got an audience with Simon Kolawole, CEO of TheCable.
He said the union had produced the likes of Laolu Akande, special adviser to Vice-President of Yemi Osinbajo; Fisayo Soyombo, pioneer editor of TheCable; Adebayo Ajala, a professor and senior research fellow at Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER).

In his response, Kolawole, TheCable CEO, said the newspaper will support the union through all means possible to ensure proper mentorship and development of the students.
He assured the team of TheCable’s continued support and technical assistance whenever the need arises.
Tijani and Awojulugbe also shared their experiences on the transition from campus journalism to mainstream journalism.
