Vernon Coaker, the United Kingdom’s (UK) minister of state for defence, visited the headquarters of the joint Task force north-east, operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), in Maiduguri, Borno state capital, on Wednesday.
During the visit, Coaker reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting Nigeria in its fight against terrorism through training and the provision of counter-improvised explosive device (C-IED) equipment.
He commended the progress made by the Nigerian military in countering insurgency and restoring normalcy in the region, describing OPHK’s efforts as commendable.
Coaker referred to Nigeria as “a key ally of the UK” and emphasised the importance of collaboration in addressing global security threats and upholding democratic values.

Waidi Shaibu, the theatre commander of OPHK, who received Coaker and his delegation, acknowledged the role of the British Defence Staff-West Africa (BDS-WA) in training Nigerian troops.
Shaibu highlighted initiatives such as the counter-IED coordination cell and the instructor development programme, which he said have enhanced the military’s operational capacity.
Both Coaker and Shaibu expressed optimism about their partnership, pledging continued efforts to combat terrorism and promote peace in the region.
