PHOTOS: WTT Contender Lagos begins as Nigerians shine in qualification round

The 2024 World Table Tennis (WTT) Contender Lagos served off to great fanfare on Wednesday.

The competition began with the qualification round as Nigerian players enjoyed slightly positive results across categories.

Abdulasis Abdulfatai, Mustapha Mustapha, Abdulrahman Abdullahi, Cecilia Akpan, and Halima Hussein progressed beyond the qualification series into the main draw of the men’s and women’s singles events.

The main draw is billed to commence on Thursday till the end of the competition on June 23.

The event organisers had announced Aruna Quadri would miss the tournament due to injury. The 35-year-old will be absent from the WTT Lagos Contender for the second consecutive year.

TheCable had reported that over 120 players from 25 countries will vie for $80,000 in cash prizes across all categories.

The competition will be at the Molade-Okoya Thomas Indoor Sports Hall in Lagos.
