Pistorius granted bail, as reactions to trial mount

Pistorius has been granted an extension on his bail till his sentencing.

Judge Masipa reviewed his bail application on Friday before the court and considered the counsel’s argument that bail should be denied on grounds that he might pose as suicidal or flight risk, and the sale of his property as well as his night club incident. The athlete had been staying with his uncle since he sold his condo to foot his legal fees.

However, the court overruled the argument and granted that Pistorius to remain out on bail until the sentencing hearing. The sentencing hearing has been fixed to take place on October 13 and the court was adjourned thereafter.

The International Paralympic released a statement to express their sorrow for the family of the deceased as well as comment on the development of the trial.

“Following today’s verdict, our thoughts remains with all those who have been affected by the terrible tragedy, in particular the friends and family of Reeva Steenkamp who sadly lost her life in the incident,” it said.

“Throughout this case, the IPC has stressed the importance of differentiating between Oscar’s contribution to the Paralympic movement and his private life. As a sports organization, it would be unwise for the IPC to comment on the conclusion of a court case that is not related to sports.”

The National Prosecuting Authority of South Africa also took to Twitter to express their disagreement with the handling of the court case.

“The National Prosecuting Authority of South Africa respects the findings of the court today. However, from the beginning the prosecutors held the view that there was sufficient evidence to secure a successful prosecution.

“We are, however, disappointed that we were not successful in securing a conviction on the original charge of premeditated murder. Further, NPA is satisfied with the manner in which the prosecution team prosecuted the case.”

Arnold Pistorius spoke on behalf of the family in reaction to the verdict.

“On behalf of the family we would like to show how grateful we are for finding Oscar not guilty of murder. We always knew the facts of the case and never doubted Oscar’s version.

“The matter is still before the court. It would not be proper to make comments on the merits of the case. We, as a family, remain deeply affected by this devastating tragedy. It won’t bring Reeva back, but our heart goes to her family and friends.”

Oscar Pistorius has been tried and convicted for culpable homicide of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day last year. Although the official sentencing has not been issued, he could face a maximum of 15 years in jail.
