76 die as plane carrying Brazilian football team crashes

A plane which had on board players of a Brazilian football club, Chapecoense, has crashed in Colombia, killing 76 passengers.

Only five passengers survived.

The flight was transporting the Brazilian side to Medellin airport for the final of the Copa Sudamericana when it went off the radar.

The plane is believed to have been carrying between 78-81 passengers and nine crew members, the country’s civil aviation board has confirmed.

The plane reportedly crashed due to lack of fuel at around 10.15pm local time.

According to Mi Orientethe plane came down in Cerro Gordo in the municipality of La Union.

Although an exact figure is currently unknown, there are reports of a few survivors.

At least 10 people have been injured and are being evacuated from the scene, the commander of La Union fire department said.

The team was expected to play in the final of the Copa Sudamericana against Atletico Nacional.
