Plane catches fire at Florida airport

A plane’s engine caught fire on the runway of an airport in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, United States on Thursday, leaving seven people injured.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officials said that the Boeing 767, which was headed to Caracas, Venezuela, caught fire while taxiing for departure.

A pilot in an aircraft traveling behind it reported that fuel was leaking from the plane before the fire started.

The fire was extinguished quickly, said a spokesman for Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

One person has been “seriously burnt”, according to Mike Jachles of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.

“The crew followed the emergency procedures, shut down the engine and evacuated the aircraft in order to assure safety to all on board,” the company said in a statement.
