Plateau killings cannot be allowed to continue, says Irabor

Lucky Irabor, chief of defence staff (CDS), has condemned the gruesome killings in Plateau communities.

He said the security agencies will ensure that such occurrences won’t happen again in the state.

Irabor spoke during a meeting with Simon Lalong, governor of Plateau, and other stakeholders of the state, on Wednesday.

“Recently, the peace process in Plateau has been distorted and we recorded loss of lives and massive destruction of properties,” he said.

“These occurrences are not heart-warming at all; these killings cannot continue.

“So, I am here with my team to look at what has been the problem, first by hearing from you and to get your opinions on what should be done

“It is also to ensure that as a people, we have a common understanding that never again will we allow the loss of lives and property as we recently experienced.”

Irabor, who commiserated with the people of the state, said the desire of President Muhammadu Buhari is to ensure that peace and tranquility return to the state.

“The security agencies alone cannot give you peace; it can only create the enabling environment for you to take the lead in the peace process,” he said.

“Plateau used to be the best place one can be in this country; the favourable weather, fertile land and the ambience is second to none.

“The desire of Mr President is to ensure that lasting peace returns to the Plateau. This is why I am here.”

There has been unrest in Plateau following the killing of 22 travellers who were returning to Ondo state from Bauchi.

Shortly after the incident, a number of attacks rocked the state, resulting in Simon Lalong, the governor, declaring a 24-hour curfew in Jos North and dusk-to-dawn restriction in Jos South and Bassa LGAs.
