For the second time in two weeks, President Muhammadu Buhari has made a last minute change of mind about a visit to a state.
First was the May 22 visit to Lagos, which was annulled due to “scheduling difficulties”, as explained by the presidency, and now is the trip to the oil-rich Ogoni land in Rivers state.
In both instances, the president delegated Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo. The case of Ogoni is peculiar because of the nature of the visit. The president was supposed to flag-off the clean-up of the land as recommended by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
Plans were in top gear until the sudden news, which came after the militants threat of assassinating the president. Nigerians took to Twitter to express their feelings over the development.

While some criticised Buhari for not visiting Ogoni, others praised him for the initiative of implementing UNEP report.
BUHARI is Nigeria’s foreign president while Osibanjo is home based president. Lol

I just realised there has been no official government position on why Mr. President is not attending #NDCleanUp . Gaps. Gaps. Gaps. Fail!!!

Who cares if the President was there to flag up? All we cares is the clean. And corruption to be dealt with to prevent future #NDCleanUp — Sir. Ahmad M. salihu (@MAIZANKOT) June 2, 2016
Bottom line #NDCleanUp is a good development. I’d concede that much credit to PMB, although he chickened out of the Ogoni trip.
