Police, army repel ISWAP attack in Borno

The police and army in a joint operation have repelled an attack on a police station by the Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP) in Jakana, Kaga LGA of Borno state.

According to Zagazola Makama, the insurgents attacked the police outpost in the early hours of Saturday around 2:30 am.

The insurgents arrived on motorcycles and began shooting sporadically.

Sources said police officers and troops of the 29 task force brigade – a fighting patrol – swiftly responded to the attack which resulted in a heavy gun battle which lasted for about 30 minutes.

A source said the insurgents were forced to flee after they were overwhelmed by the troops.

The source said no casualty was recorded in the encounter, adding that a bulletproof vest and two magazines were recovered from the insurgents.

On March 27, troops of Operation Hadin Kai repelled an attack by ISWAP on Kunnari, a village housing a military base in Buratai town, killing 10 insurgents.

Also on March 29, troops repelled an attack by ISWAP on a military base in Mafa LGA of Borno state.

Meanwhile, on March 9, police repelled another attack by ISWAP on one of its formations in Borno.

The insurgents attacked the police formation around 2 am from different directions and killed an officer in the process.
