Police arrest 20-year-old suspected kidnapper in Bauchi, recover N8.4m cash

The police command in Bauchi says it has arrested a 20-year old suspected kidnapper in the state.

Umar Sanda, Bauchi commissioner of police, announced this on Tuesday at a media briefing on the activities of the command.

The police commissioner said the suspect, who is said to be from Tashan Daudu Soro in Ganjuwa LGA of the state, was arrested in September for his alleged involvement in armed robbery, kidnapping, and being in possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition.

He listed items recovered from the suspect to include N8,466,000 cash, one sub-machine gun (SMG) rifle with 92 live ammunition, one empty magazine, 7.62mm caliber of live ammunition, eight mobile phones, one MP3 player, one Honda motorcycle and one cutlass.

However, the suspect was said to have claimed that the items belonged to his boss.

According to the police, the suspect said his boss was taking him out on his motorcycle to work as a pastoralist when he was arrested, but his boss fled.

Speaking further, the police commissioner also said on September 7, around 4pm, a patrol team attached to Maina-Maji divisional police headquarters in Alkaleri LGA of the state, killed two kidnap suspects during a raid on their hideout.

“On arrival, the kidnappers opened fire on the police operatives and while returning fire, two of the kidnappers were neutralised at the spot and one was arrested,” he said.

Items recovered during the raid included one AK-47 rifle and 29 live ammunition.

Sanda added that the police remain committed to ensuring a safe and secured environment for the people of Bauchi.
