Police arrest 9 in Borno for ‘waving Russian flags’ during protest

The police command in Borno says nine protesters have been arrested for allegedly displaying Russian flags in Maiduguri.

NAN reports that Yusuf Lawal, commissioner of police in Borno, provided the situation report on Tuesday.

He said the suspects were arrested on August 5 in the Zannari Tamsu area. 

Lawal identified those arrested as Khalafi Abdulhamid, Mohammed Abubakar, Mohamed Ibrahim, Abba Hassan, Bashir Ahmad, Musa Lawan, Abba Mallam, Habibu Auwal, and Inusa Abdullahi.

“The suspects were transferred to the Crack Squad for discreet investigation and diligent prosecution,” he said.

The commissioner added that normalcy has returned to the state, while assuring that the police would continue to monitor and patrol the area to ensure public safety.

Protesters waving foreign flags have been spotted in Kano, Abuja, Kaduna and Borno since the nationwide demonstrations commenced on August 1.

On Monday, President Bola Tinubu, who spoke through Christopher Musa, chief of defence staff, warned that waving foreign flags during the protests would no longer be tolerated.
