Police arrest couple for ‘kidnapping self’ in Niger

The Niger state police command has arrested a couple for alleged conspiracy and self kidnapping.

Wasiu Abiodun, the command spokesman, disclosed this in a statement on Friday in Minna.

According to the statement, the couple, Mohammed Mohammed and Sadiya, who reside in the Chanchaga LGA of the state were arrested on July 22, in the Limawa area of Minna metropolis.

Abiodun said Sadiya had faked her kidnap on July 15, around old airport road, in the state, making her father pay the sum of one million Naira out of five million Naira demanded as the ransom.

He added that the police eventually invited her for interrogation, there she confessed to have colluded with her husband to carry out the operation.

The police spokesperson also added that her husband confessed to being complicit in the activity.

“Her father was contacted by an unknown caller who demanded for five million Naira, finally the sum of one million Naira was given for her release,” he said.

“During interrogation, she confessed to have conspired with her husband, Mohammed to fake her kidnap and that she was taken to Nugupi village.

“The husband also confessed to have given his mobile phone to a friend named, Abdullahi, who negotiated and collected the ransom.”
