Police arrest dismissed SPY officer who ‘assaulted’ skit maker in Lagos

Sunday Osagie Sunday Osagie

The Lagos police command has arrested one Sunday Osagie, a former SPY officer, over assault on Chioma Ogbu, a skit maker better known as Ekwutousi Philo.

Supernumerary police (SPY) are individuals temporarily embedded in the force to perform certain policing functions at the behest of private organisations or government officials.

On Monday, Ogbu took to her Instagram to alert netizens that a “policeman assaulted and stole from me” on her way to Lagos island.

In a viral video shared by the skit maker on the same day, Osagie was identified as the officer involved in the alleged assault and robbery of the skit maker.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Lagos police command confirmed that Osagie was arrested alongside one Ayodele Adeolu who was in possession of a tricycle and a Toyota Yaris during the time of apprehension.

The police added that Osagie was dismissed in April 2023, while stating that he is no longer with the Nigerian police force.

“Based on a viral video from a skit maker, Ekwutousi Philo, alleging that she was robbed on 20th October, 2023, along Ketu-Alapere highway by some policemen, the decoy team of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) has arrested Sunday Osagie, 31, who was captured in a video with the skit maker,” the statement reads.

“Also arrested with the suspect is Ayodele Adeolu (45), while a ‘korope’ with the registration number LA 910 FST and a Toyota Yaris Verso with the registration number FST 656 JD have been recovered.

“Sunday Osagie was a Spy/Mechanic employed by the Lagos state government in May 2011.

“He was dismissed from Lagos state public service and dekitted in April 2023 for ‘absence from duty for six months without permission, illegal duties, and extortion of money from innocent citizens’ after facing the Personnel Management Board (PMB).”

Olayinka Egbeyemi, commander of the Rapid Response Squad, has directed that the suspects and recovered vehicles be transferred to the state command for further investigation.
