Police arrest father for ‘chaining six-year-old son’ in Bauchi

The police command in Bauchi says it has arrested a 30-year-old father for chaining his son.

In a statement on Monday, Ahmed Wakil, Bauchi police spokesperson, said the command received a report of child abuse on Sunday.

He said Mamuda Abubakar, from Abbo in Giade LGA of Bauchi, allegedly chained Adamu Mamuda, his six-year-old son, inside a room at their home.

The police spokesperson said a team of detectives successfully freed the child, adding that the father is currently under investigation at the state criminal investigation department (SCID) in Bauchi.

Wakil said the suspect confined the minor to prevent him from going to his maternal grandfather’s house.

“The suspect and the minor’s mother separated five years ago, and the mother has since remarried and no longer lives with her father,” the police said.

“He explained that his son should not visit the grandfather’s house due to the lack of morality among the children there. When the son insisted on going, the suspect became furious and ultimately chained the minor.”

Another suspect, Adamu Alhassan, 30, was arrested in Toro council for breaking into a 60-year-old woman’s house and attacking her.

“A report was received from the Officer-in-Charge (O/C) of Nabardo Police Outstation regarding a grievous incident that occurred on 07/07/2024 at about 0100hrs that one Aliyu Yunusa, a 40-year-old resident of Yelwa Village, reported that unknown individuals broke into his mother’s residence and attacked her with a dangerous weapon,” Wakil added.

“The victim, Safiya Yunusa, a 60-year-old woman, sustained severe injuries to her head.”

The victim was conveyed to Toro general hospital for medical attention where she was confirmed dead by a doctor.

Wakil said Alhassan was arrested with the collaboration of vigilante groups.
