The Lagos police command says its operatives have arrested a suspect who “defrauded” a Thai national of the sum of $216,000.

In a post on X, Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos police spokesperson, said Chimereze Chinedu, the suspect, was arrested on May 10 in Enugu state.

Hundeyin said Chinedu was arrested by the state criminal investigation department (SCID) after weeks of diligent investigation and technical support from INTERPOL.

He said that the suspect defrauded his victim under the pretence of selling 37 tricycles to her.

“Chimereze further expanded his fraudulent activity by forging letters of the State Criminal Investigative Department, Lagos, showing that the tricycles were seized by the police and further extorted thirty million naira from the victim to purportedly secure the release of the tricycles,” the statement reads.

Hundeyin said an investigation is ongoing to apprehend all other individuals involved in the crime, adding that the suspect is currently in custody.

The police spokesperson reiterated the command’s commitment to tackling internet fraud and ensuring the justice of perpetrators.
