Police arrest man for ‘impersonating soldier, defrauding victim of N210K’ in Bauchi

The Bauchi police command says its operatives have arrested Aminu Mohammed, a 30-year-old man, for allegedly impersonating a soldier and defrauding his victim of N210,000.

In a statement on Thursday, Ahmed Wakil, Bauchi police spokesperson, said Muhammad was nabbed after he scammed his victim by falsely offering to help them get a job in the army.

Wakil said the suspect was apprehended on Monday at Magaji quarters by operatives of Tafawa Balewa housing estate divisional police headquarters in Bauchi.

“The arrest was made on July 22, 2024, after a complaint was filed against him,” the statement reads.

“Aminu Muhammad collected the sum of two hundred and ten thousand naira (N210,000.00) from an unsuspecting individual under the false representation of assisting in securing a job with the Nigerian Army.

“Furthermore, the suspect deceitfully directed his victim to meet his friend (who is currently at large) to facilitate his entry into the military training school in Zaria.

“However, after spending eight days in Zaria, the victim could not meet the individual who was supposed to take him to the training school.”

The spokesperson said preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had no prior military experience or affiliation.

He added that he had obtained a pair of camouflage trousers from a friend who is a serving military personnel.

Wakil said Auwal Musa, commissioner of police in Bauchi, has directed the case to be transferred to the state criminal investigation department for a thorough and discreet probe.
