Police arrest officer whose ‘stray bullet killed passenger’ in Edo

The police command in Edo says it has arrested one of its officers who allegedly fired a shot that killed a passenger in Benin, the state capital, on Friday.

According to the police, the incident happened when operatives of the anti-kidnapping and cybercrime swung into action to arrest one murder suspect at the First East Circular axis of the state capital.

The police said in the process of restraining the fleeing murder suspect a stray bullet hit a passenger in a moving vehicle identified as Moses Adam.

Kontongs Bello, Edo police spokesperson, said the victim was rushed to the Edo Specialist Hospital, where he later died.

“The bullet, unfortunately, hit one of the occupants of a moving vehicle identified as Moses Adam. He was rushed to the Edo Specialist Hospital where he gave up the ghost,” the statement reads.

“The erring officer will go through an administrative trial that will determine his culpability.”

According to Bello, Philip Agbadu, the state police commissioner, is saddened by the situation and has ordered an investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The police spokesperson asked the family of the victim and the public to remain calm to allow for an investigation to be carried out.

He also disclosed that the murder suspect has been arrested in connection with the death of one Bright Orikose last December.
