The police command in Imo has arrested seven suspected cultists.

In a statement on Wednesday, Henry Okoye, the command’s spokesperson, said the suspects were apprehended on October 6 when operatives raided their hideout in Irete, Owerri-West LGA.

Okoye identified the suspects as Wisdom Obiora, 22; Eke Charles, 20; Joseph Akachukwu, 24; Ohaegbulam Bright, 25; and Ugorji Onyekachi, 19.

Operatives of the Orji divisional headquarters also apprehended two suspected cultists — David Obinna and Ebuka Mba — aged 22, near the gate of the Imo State University, on October 7.

“During the operation, one locally made pistol, two rounds of live cartridges, and weed suspected to be Cannabis Sativa were recovered from the suspects,” Henry said.

“Upon interrogation, they admitted to being members of the Black Axe confraternity.

“Other ammunition recovered from them included another locally fabricated shotgun, three rounds of live cartridges, one expanded cartridge, suspected Cannabis Sativa, and a dagger.

“Efforts are underway to apprehend and prosecute the manufacturers and distributors of the locally made firearms.

“The command assures the public that thorough investigations are ongoing, and those apprehended will face prosecution upon the completion of credible inquiries.

“These operations reflect the command’s commitment to ridding the state of cult-related crimes and ensuring a safer environment for Imolites.

“To this end, the Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, has urged parents to discourage their children from associating with cult groups.”
