Benneth Igweh, the assistant inspector-general of police (AIG) in charge of zone 7, Abuja, says operatives have arrested a suspect linked to the abduction of 20 medical students in Benue in 2024.

In August 2024, the victims, who were students at the University of Maiduguri and the University of Jos, were ambushed by gunmen around the Otukpo area of the state.

The students were reportedly travelling for the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students (FECAMDS) annual convention in Enugu.

NAN reports that Igweh spoke in Abuja on Tuesday during a media briefing.

He said the suspect and two others, now at large, are members of a gang that specialises in armed robbery and kidnapping in Benue and its environs.

The AIG added that the suspect confessed to being a member of the gang responsible for the abduction of the students in 2024.

Igweh said the suspect also confessed to having taken part in several robbery operations along Adiga road in Benue, where he had snatched different motorcycles from travellers.
