Police arrest two civil servants for ‘selling government property’ in Kano

The Kano police command says two civil servants in the state ministry of water resources and an accomplice have been arrested for allegedly selling government property.

In a statement on Tuesday, Abdullahi Kiyawa, police spokesperson in Kano, said the suspects forged a letter and approved the auction of some water irrigation pumps and tanks without the authorisation of the ministry.

Kiyawa said one of the suspects, Abubakar Gambo, a director in charge of administration and general services of Kano state ministry of water resources, was arrested in Tundun Wada LGA.

He said the suspects confessed during interrogation that they sold the items for the sum of N500,000.

“The Kano state police command on 9/12/2023 at about 2130hrs arrested one Abubakar Gambo, ’m’, 49 years old who is a director, in charge of administration and general services of Kano state ministry of water resources alongside two other accomplices having conspired and forged a letter authorizing auction of some high capacity water irrigation pump and tank which are critical public utility without the proper consent of the supervising ministry,” the statement reads.

“The said suspect Abubakar Gambo was arrested at Karefa water irrigation scheme in Tudun Wada LGA.

“Two other accomplices, Baba Yahaya, assistant secretary administration and Nuhu Mansur, former manager of Karefa water irrigation scheme of Tudun Wada LGA, Kano were also arrested and all the exhibits were recovered by the police.

“During the investigation, the suspects admitted that they jointly committed the offence and sold the property at the rate of five hundred thousand naira (N500,000:00).

“The proceed of the crime; the sum of five hundred thousand naira (N500,000:00) was also recovered from the said Abubakar Gambo.”

The police spokesperson added that the suspects will be charged in court after the investigation is completed.
