Ekiti police command says its operatives have apprehended two men for allegedly stealing diesel used for powering street lights in the state.

In a statement on Wednesday, Sunday Abutu, the command’s spokesperson, said one of the suspects was arrested on Tuesday night by officers of the rapid response squad (RRS) in the state.

Abutu said the suspect was nabbed with a 25-litre jerry can containing diesel allegedly stolen along NTA road, Ado-Ekiti.

He added that the accused also confessed to having stolen the diesel from the government generator powering the street lights along the axis.

The police spokesperson further stated that the suspect mentioned the name of another person, who was subsequently arrested for his alleged involvement in the crime.

Abutu said that the two individuals would be arraigned in court soon.

He urged residents of the state to be security conscious and take ownership of government properties around them.

The arrest comes just a few days after the apprehension of eight suspects alleged to be involved in several bank robberies in the state.

The command said the robbery gang was allegedly involved in attacks on several banks in the state, including banks in Oye and Iyin, where lives were lost in 2018 and 2019.

Those arrested were Dele Ajayi (Doni), Ifeanyi Emmanuel, Segun Folorunso Ojo (Alakure), Raymond Hamilton Francis, Godwin Emeka (Mayo), and Odiri Isaac (Zion).

Two other gang members, Shola Ayeni (Sengere) and Aremu Adebayo (Senior boy), were arrested in different towns of Ekiti by the police.
