Police arrest two suspects over ‘murder’ of Aiyedatiwa’s campaign team member

The police command in Ondo says its operatives have arrested two suspects over the alleged murder of Alaba Abey, a ward coordinator for the Lucky Aiyedatiwa campaign organisation foot-soldiers (LACO-FS).

The suspects are Abubakar Umar and Mohammed Sheu.

In April 2024, Abey was gunned down by unknown assailants at Supare Akoko in the Akoko south-west LGA of Ondo state.

In a statement on Thursday, Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, Ondo police spokesperson, said Umar and Sheu confessed to the murder of Abey.

Odunlami-Omisanya said Sheu was arrested while operatives were conducting a stop-and-search operation on a bus heading to Owo town from Ikare junction.

“During the search, the demeanour of Mohammed Sheu ‘m’ age 21 years changed. On a reasonable suspicion, he was singled out for brief interrogation,” the statement reads.

“During interrogation, a voice note dropped as a message on his phone; when opened, it was a reply from Sheu’s friend (on the run).

“Further investigation led to the arrest of Abubakar Umar ‘m,’ age 24 years, who also confessed to committing a similar crime as a gang member.

“The suspects stated further that they were responsible for the kidnap at Supare Akoko that led to the death of Hon. Alaba Abe Excel in April 2024, and in September they kidnapped another person in a popular hotel in Owo.”
