The federal capital territory (FCT) police command says it has banned all forms of protest by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN).
In a statement on Tuesday, Josephine Adeh, FCT police spokesperson, said the command also prohibited the group from carrying out its planned Ashura procession.
Adeh warned that the command would not hesitate to prosecute anyone who violates the ban.
She reiterated the command’s commitment to ensuring law and order in the FCT.
“According to the intelligence we have gathered, members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, also known as Shi’ite, are planning to hold a protest/procession to commemorate the 2024 Islamic calendar day of Ashura,” the statement reads.
“In the past, the group’s processions, protests, and other activities have ended violently.
“As a result, the Commissioner of Police has banned their activities and ordered the arrest of anyone who violates this order.”
The Kaduna police command also issued a statement banning Shiite protests in the state.
