Police beef up security in Rivers

The Rivers state police command has deployed its men in strategic places across the state as a result of the ruling of the election tribunal which annulled the election of Nyesom Wike as governor of the state.

The tribunal ordered the Independent National Electoral Commision (INEC) to conduct fresh election in the state.

Grace Iringe-Koko, spokeswoman of the command, told NAN in Port Harcourt on Saturday that the situation in Rivers is calm.

“We have not recorded any incidents and the state is calm. Police is on top of the situation,” she said.

Meanwhile, different reactions have trailed the verdict of the tribunal.

Felix Obuah, chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers, described the ruling as “a rape on democracy”.

But Ibim Semenitari, who served as commissioner for information and communication in the administration of Rotimi Amaechi, Wike’s predecessor, said the judges “stood on the side of truth”.

” We thank God and praise him for this victory and we are grateful to Rivers people for their support,” she said.

For Chris Finebone, state publicity secretary of the APC, the tribunal’s ruling is a proof of what is right.

“The judgement is a consummation that whenever you stand on the side of what is right, you will ultimately prevail,” he said.

“The law is said to be the saviour of the common man and today the tribunal proved that in its judgement.”
