There are reports that over 30 people, including students of the College of Education in Katsina Ala were killed by gunmen.

But reports of the number of those allegedly killed have varied. The figures of those reportedly murdered have been put at over 100 and 36 — both numbers have not been verified by TheCable.

But the reported killings have led to an outrage on Twitter, a microblogging platform.

When contacted by TheCable on Friday, Catherine Sewuese, spokesperson of Benue police command, said she has not confirmed the killings.

“I have not been able to confirm that from any of the officers on the ground because there were no reports,” Sewuese said.

“They have gone out now to trail those areas where these allegations are coming from because they earlier alleged that 100 persons were killed. We went and didn’t see any corpse, now they say 32.

“We have deployed men again to go back there. Maybe later in the day, if I get anything I will let you know.”

Benue has recorded attacks on its communities by gunmen.

Samuel Ortom, Benue governor, had asked residents of the state to protect themselves using weapons not prohibited by law.
