Police: Death toll from Kano mosque explosion now 15

The Kano police command says the death toll from the mosque explosion at Gadan village in Gezawa LGA of the state has increased to 15.

On Wednesday, one person was confirmed dead while 24 others sustained injuries in an explosion at a mosque in Gadan village.

Abdullahi Kiyawa, the police spokesperson in Kano, said the mosque was allegedly set on fire by Shafi’u Abubakar, who claimed he did so due to a dispute with some family members over inheritance.

Kiyawa said the suspect poured petrol around the mosque when worshipers were observing the morning prayer.

The police spokesperson said Abubakar has been arrested, adding that he claimed the mosque was set on fire because his family members were inside during the time.

The command, on Thursday, said the death toll from the explosion rose from one to six.

NAN reports that Usaini Gumel, commissioner of police in Kano, said the 15 victims died while receiving treatment at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.

Gumel said the incident is still under investigation.
