The police in Lagos have arrested Stella Nwadigo, a school teacher who was filmed physically assaulting a toddler.

In a now-viral video, Nwadigo, a teacher at Christ-Mitots Primary School in the Ikorodu area of Lagos, was depicted violently smacking a toddler in a numeracy class.

The footage, which showed the toddler sobbing, has generated outrage from concerned Nigerians on social media.

“The footage has raised serious concerns about the safety and well-being of our little ones in school,” a social media user noted.

Officers from the Owutu police station in Ikorodu have arrested the teacher.

Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos police PRO, confirmed on Wednesday that the teacher has been detained pending a probe of the matter.

In a statement, the Lagos Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), condemned the teacher’s behaviour.

It said institutions of learning should create safe, warm, and protective environments for all children in their care.

“The state government remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of every child by enforcing strict regulations, holding offenders accountable, and working with stakeholders to promote a zero-tolerance policy for abuse in any form,” it added.
