Police ‘dismantle armed robbery syndicate’ in Imo during gun duel

The Imo police command says its operatives have dismantled an armed robbery syndicate that has been terrorising Owerri north LGA.

In a statement on Tuesday, Henry Okoye, the command’s spokesperson, said operatives acted on credible intelligence, which led to the arrest of Moses Nanzi, a suspect.

The spokesperson said officers engaged the suspects in a gun battle, adding that a double-barrel gun and seven live cartridges were recovered from Nanzi after he sustained an injury.

“On October 15, 2024, at approximately 3:20 AM, a patrol team from the Owerri North Divisional Headquarters responded swiftly to a distress call about an armed robbery on Dominion Street near Don Kay, in Owerri North LGA,” the statement reads.

“Upon arrival, the police encountered armed robbers who opened fire on them — the officers demonstrating bravery, maneuvered into strategic positions and effectively returned fire.

“During the confrontation, one suspect was neutralized, while another named Moses Nanzi ‘m’, 31yrs of Faringada in Plateau State, sustained a gunshot injury and was arrested.

“The remaining gang members fled into the bushes. A double-barrel gun and seven rounds of live cartridges were recovered from the arrested suspect.”

Okoye said a manhunt for the escapees was under way.
