Police foil attack on divisional headquarters in Enugu

The Enugu police command says its operatives foiled an attack by gunmen on the Igbo-Eze north divisional headquarters around Nsukka axis of the state.

Daniel Ndukwe, spokesperson of the command, announced the development in a statement on Friday.

According to Ndukwe, the police foiled the attack on July 21 at about 6pm.

He said the criminals came “in their numbers” and began shooting sporadically at the station.

The spokesperson said the security operatives exchanged gunfire with the attackers, adding that the police did not record any casualty.

However, some of the attackers were said to have sustained gunshot wounds.

“Police operatives of the Command foiled an attack on Igbo-Eze North Police Division by armed and hooded criminal elements,” the statement reads.

“The criminal elements came in their numbers, operating in black-coloured Hilux van and Toyota Highlander vehicles.

“The hoodlums shot sporadically at the station, with the police operatives returning fire, forcing them, many of whom are suspected to have sustained gunshot wounds, to escape.

“The general public and owners of medical facilities in the state have been enjoined to report any person(s) with gunshot injuries to the nearest police station.”

The development comes days after gunmen attacked a police station in Eika-Ohizenyi area of Okechi LGA, Kogi state.

During the attack, which occurred in June, the gunmen were said to have used explosives, while a police inspector was killed and a section of the station was damaged.
