Police: How suspected thugs killed PDP LGA chair in Ebonyi

The police command in Ebonyi state has confirmed the killing of Peter Nweke, the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in Ezza north LGA of the state. 

The governorship and state houses of assembly elections were held on Saturday across the country.

There were widespread violence, suppression, and intimidation of voters during the elections.

NAN reports that Onome Onovwakpoyeya, Ebonyi police public relations officer, told journalists on Sunday in Abakaliki, that Nweke was beaten to death by suspected thugs during Saturday’s elections.

“The DPO and his team tried to rescue him, but he was confirmed dead by doctors on duty when they got to the hospital,” Onovwakpoyeya said.

Innocent Nomeh, a PDP chieftain and a resident of the area alleged that the deceased was killed after being threatened by some thugs in the area.

Nomeh, who is also the PDP house of assembly candidate for Ezza north constituency, described the incident as “shocking and barbaric”.

“He was killed after being threatened by some thugs. Some hours after being threatened, they traced him and took him to an isolated area, where they killed him.

“It is so unfortunate that such a young man will die because of the election. I want the security agencies to deepen investigations to fish out whoever was involved in killing.”
