Police kill ‘notorious cultist’, recover firearms in Rivers

The Rivers police command says its operatives have killed Gbarani Bume otherwise known as ‘Pelele’, an alleged notorious cultist and kidnapper, in Khana LGA of the state.

In a statement on Sunday, Grace Iringe-Koko, Rivers police spokesperson, said the deceased opened fire on sighting operatives.

The spokesperson said the suspect was decimated during the ensuing gun duel.

Iringe-Koko said the suspect is a member of the Iceland cult which has been terrorising the Bere and Tabaa axis.

She said they ran out of luck when the police received intelligence about an attempt by the gang to abduct a site engineer.

“On the 15th of November, 2024, operatives of the Command attached to Bori Division acting on a tip-off, were mobilized to Luawii Community where Pelele and his gang were attempting to kidnap a site Engineer,” the statement reads.

“The hoodlums on sighting the Operatives, opened fire on the operatives and a fierce crossfire ensued between the Police Operatives and the hoodlums during which Pelele was fatally wounded, and his accomplices escaped with various degrees of bullet wounds.

“Some of the items recovered during the operation include one (1) AK-47 Rifle, Two (2) Magazines, Ten (10) Rounds of Live Ammunition.

“Bume was a member of the Iceland Cult Group, which has been terrorizing Beree/Tabaa axis of Khana Local Government Area.”

Iringe-Koko added that investigations are ongoing, with increased efforts to capture and bring the remaining members of the gang to justice.
