Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has described as “heartbreaking”, the killing of Bolanle Raheem, a Lagos lawyer.
TheCable had earlier reported that the incident happened on Sunday in the Ajah area of Lagos when the deceased and her family were returning from Christmas service.
Reports had it that some officers attached to the Ajiwe police station in Ajah had ordered the car conveying the family to stop and during this time, one of the officers allegedly shot at the car and the bullet hit the lawyer.
In a tweet on Monday, Abubakar said there is a need for reform that will “sanitise” the force.

He also called on the police authorities to ensure that the officers responsible for the act are brought to justice.
“The shooting of Bolanle Raheem by a police officer is heartbreaking and stands condemned,” he wrote.
“This latest shooting calls to attention the urgent need for Police reforms that will sanitise the Force and bring it in line with best policing practices.

“I call on the police authorities and the Justice system to expedite action on the matter, as justice delayed is justice denied. This will serve as a deterrent to the incidents of irresponsible shooting of innocent citizens by law enforcement agents.
“I express my deepest condolences to the family, friends and the Nigerian Bar Association, in particular its Lagos chapter. May her soul rest in peace.”
Meanwhile, Benjamin Hundeyin, Lagos police command spokesperson, said an assistant superintendent of police (ASP) who shot at the deceased and two other officers are currently in custody.
Also, Usman Baba, the inspector-general of police, has ordered speedy investigation and prosecution of the officers responsible for the “ugly and unprofessional act”.
