Police officer beaten to death in Borno

Members of a notorious criminal gang known as Marlians have reportedly beaten a police officer identified as Babagana Mala to death in Borno.

Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, said the incident happened on July 23.

The criminal gang is said to be famous for attacking citizens and snatching properties in the areas.

A video of the incident obtained by Zagazola showed how about 10 youths surrounded and beat the victim to a pulp.

According to the publication, the police officer, attached to the CRACK squad was killed near the 33 artillery military brigade in Maiduguri, the Borno capital.

In the video, one of the suspected criminals seized the gun of the policeman, while others were shouting “Ka Manna mai” (shoot him), kill him, don’t leave him, you think you can come here and challenge us, don’t leave him, don’t leave him, take his gun”.

The publication said some youths later intervened and took the victim to the hospital where he was confirmed dead.

Five of the suspects believed to be connected to the case, including a lady seen in the video, were arrested by the police.

Others were said to have fled and are currently at large.

Efforts to reach Kamiludeen Sani, Borno police spokesperson, were not successful as he did not respond to calls or messages sent to his mobile phone.
