Police: Over 1,000 high-profile suspects arrested in one month

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) says it has arrested more than 1,000 high-profile suspects for their alleged involvement in various violent crimes across the country.

Usman Baba, acting inspector-general of police, disclosed this at a media briefing held at the presidential villa on Thursday.

On April 6, Baba was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari as the acting IGP to replace Mohammed Adamu, the former IGP.

Highlighting the achievements by the police so far, the acting IGP said the suspects were arrested between April and May 2021.

Giving a breakdown of the arrests made, the police chief said 398 persons were arrested for armed robbery, 258 for cult-related offences, 222 for murder, 202 for banditry, and 86 for kidnapping.

The IGP added that the list of suspects included those allegedly involved in the attack on the convoy of Samuel Ortom, governor of Benue state.

The police also said it rescued 152 abducted persons, while 413 firearms and 10,120 rounds of ammunition were recovered during the period under review.
