Police prosecute four officers over ‘extortion of corps members’ in Lagos

The Lagos state police command has summoned four officers accused of extorting some members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

In a series of videos posted on X on Friday, three persons, said to be corp members, were pulled aside in their car by the police officers in Surulere area of the state.

In some of the videos, the officers were seen checking the vehicle papers of one of the corp members who drove the car.

In another one, the officers escorted them to the station and subsequently screenshots of bank receipt of money allegedly sent to the police went viral on social media.

The officers were confirmed to be from Kafaru Oluwole Tinubu Area C police command in Surulere area of the state.

Responding to the incident, Benjamin Hundeyin, Lagos state police spokesperson, said the officers have been summoned for trial.

“The men have been summoned and their trial has commenced,” he wrote.

“We urge the complainants to visit the Complaint Response Unit at the State Headquarters to testify at the ongoing trial.

“They are men of Area C, Surulere. The Area Commander has been contacted. The men have been identified. They are being interrogated. However, we need more than a verbal accusation.

“Kindly tell us more. The spy camera would have captured the exchange of money too, be it cash or transfer. Give us something to work it. Update as regards the outcome of the ongoing interrogation will be made available.”
