After police raid, senate shelves debate on Peace Corps

The senate has postponed a conference committee report on the Nigeria Peace Corps (NPC) bill, 2017.

This comes two days after the police raided the headquarters of the corps in Jabi, Abuja, and arrested Dickson Akoh, commandant of the organisation, and over 40 of its members.

On Wednesday, the police alleged that “terrorist affiliates have infiltrated the corps to destroy the existing peace currently being enjoyed in the country”.

Jimoh Moshood, police spokesman, said the Peace Corps was registered as a non-governmental organisation (NGO) but opened “illegal training camps” across the county.

“It is consequent upon the above and the veracity of intelligence reports from reliable sources, indicating that subversive elements/groups and terrorist affiliates have infiltrated the Peace Corps of Nigeria secretly to ruin and destroy the existing peace currently being enjoyed in the country that the Peace Corps of Nigeria secret training camps were closed down in the FCT, Kwara and Niger states,” Moshood said in a statement.

“For avoidance of doubt the Peace Corps of Nigeria under the leadership of one Akoh Dickson was registered as an NGO but with brazen impunity, total disregard to the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, opened illegal training camps in some States of the Country, where thousands of youths and other persons without proper background check and screening are receiving converts military training.”

Both chambers of the national assembly have passed the bill for third reading, and the conference committee report of the bill, was slated for consideration on Thursday.

But when it was called up for consideration at the upper legislative chamber on Thursday, Ahmed Lawan, senate leader, pleaded that the matter be taken in another sitting.

Subsequently, the report was withdrawn.

Six members of the Peace Corps were reportedly injured during the police raid, while three others were unconscious at the National Hospital, Abuja.

I fear una. Mtceew, police av been criticizing from day1, looking for one way or the other to ruin them. We all know that it’s police who ‘ll see white and says it’s black. U’re a disgrace to d paramilitary and Nigeria as a whole.

  4. Your comment..Agreed the IGP should first sanitize his corrupt force, who shamelessly collect money on the road as if it is part of their duty.police you know that Nigerians will regard peace corps as they are more disciplined plus the fine put on any erring officer of peace corps.IGP cool down peace corps came to save us from your men.

  5. Why the arrest now police and other paramilitary don’t see anything wrong in the training and operation of PCN for the past 18years PCN has not being seen has threat to the PEACE of the country money involved in recruitment process hasn’t being seen has exploitation for many years and we have so called security that don’t raised alarm and strategies means to reduce rate of unemployment among the youths rather they preferred ‘borrowing frustrated youths gun to Robb n get their own share’ well by the way why mentioned PCN with other security agencies Maritime, Merchants Navy etc? Why not talk about PCN only. Why police are going this now? After the bill has been passed by the National Assembly. May be the PCN is a threat to Police I’m very sure not to the PEACE of Nigeria.

  6. The Nigeria police is the worst thing that happened to Nigeria and this is the reason why the country must be restructured.

  7. police are senseless paramilitary and corrupt people in this country, they corrupt every nook and cranny in this country with their black sense of uniform, leave peace corps alone to be established they are created to reduce unemployment rate in this country with over 200,000 officers.

  8. Nigeria police why are u after peace corps of Nigeria? PCN as come too saved this country from ur threat and corruption.

  9. it wil be a shamful thin if the senate are they nd the police is tellin them that they dnt no there work becous befor the first, second nd even third bil was pas they have look into it , debat on it,public hearing was carry out ,greate Nigerian such a stakholder, senators traditional ruler nd other prominent nigrerian that had put to the success of the third bil now common polic nd there corruption want to tell us these people dnt no there work? 12. Your comment..Amb. Dickson you are indeed a child of destiny you are born to be victorious and you will continue to be victorious life i salute your courage may God bless you and keep you

  13. police you are a waste to the nation. I wish u could be banned and be replaced wit vigilante group cos they only need some few training to close d gap of difference wit u. shame on u and peace corpse shall be by God grace.

  14. Your comment..Nigerian peace corps has come to stay no matter the challenge they pose to the organization, God Almighty will stand and fight for Amb. Dickson Akoh and the organization. Let me remind u dat whatever any evil other organization (paramilitary) plan against Nigerian Peace Corps will surely bounce on you. God will surely judge everyone of u all.

  15. we should know that nothing good comes easy and d way to success is narrow, despite d challenge Mr Dickson should keep struggling bcos winner never quit and quitters never win. I believe very soon Pcn bill will b assented

  16. Your comment..Peace corp has come to stay, nomatter what NPF is doing, these is an opportunity to reduce unemployment and crime among the youth of the Nation

  17. NPF what you failed to provide and some come to asist on the matter instead of you to wellcome it,so you just still try to show that your bad records of lack of performing good duty cant you remember that peace corps is existing since 18yr ago and you are showing to the public that the ng senate don’t no what they are doing for passing the peace corps bill into law,

  18. The.NPC is my only hope I have because nobody forced me to pay, I payed it voluntarily hoping for the best in them, police you are just being jealous. They will push us to the top.

  19. NPF WHAT BELONG 2 PEACE CORPS GIVE IT 2 PEACE CORP B\COS WE WANT 9JA 2 HAVE PEACE ,NO CORRUPTION, NOT STAYIN IN DE ROAD COLLECTIN 20 20 NAIRA,I AM ASKING NPF UR DUTIES IS 2 SECURE OR STAY IN ROAD COLLECT 20 20 NAIRA?

  20. If u read some d comments people are not in support of NPF ! when u travel out of d country especially advance country PEACE CORPS are there NPF dey will never come out the say TRUTH.

  21. Your comment..Nigerian criminals always oppose thier Nigeria police. it is the wost of all but last year only 10000 waa needed for recruitment more than 10000000 application were received they are crime fighters so I didn’t expect criminals to love crime fighters

  22. Police which one b ur own? Nigeria is battling wit insecurity and peace corp has come 2 asst instead of u 2 welcm them u re jealous, peace corp has 2 stay

  23. Your comment..NPC&NPF will work under 1 shelve very soon, lets pray for reconciliation b/w them jealous or whatever does nt matter our aim is peace of Nigeria wheither by corps or by force but wish to b by corps & force.

  24. Your comment..how many universities, polytechnics, colleges of education&many more higher institutions not mentioned do we have in nigeria? How many copers, graduates each years from these institutions? How many of them were able to secured job?How many of them have access to loan to start their own buz? But,we want our country to be developed ,but our youths to remain under develop? We want peace to reign in the counry when the youths that suppose to develop the country are jobless. We don’t want them to grow? And so,what do we espect to happen in this terrible situation? And still,if they go wayward you get them arrested to pay for what they did not bargain for(just too bad) or jail term(unfair). Please, let there be positive progress for our youths. What have you done to peoples that stole nigeria’s money in the past? Nigeria is rich please. The youths shall grow…

    1. Are there not Nigerian Police Force in this Country Since 18 Years ago? while now that the Bill has been pass into Law by National Assembly? where were you, better keep quiet and respect yourself.

  25. Your comment..hm NPF may be u observe NPC will stop u to the collecting of 20.20 naira from the people that is why u want stop them,so u can not.

  26. Nigerian police police is simply envy the peace corps. They see themselves as almighty. It is the youth that will complain if we are been duped. For as long as the bill establishing peace corps is signed by Mr PRESIDENT, the training fee is ok. God will disgrace those who are behind this hinderance.

  27. jealousy is just natural. NPF did the same thing during NSCDC and today NPF losses their glory.they became depreciated like Nigeria naira against dollar. up u go NPC let enemies kill themselves. gbam

  28. Your comment..peace corps will bring glory to this our country NIGERIA in feature. Nigeria police are just jelous of them for nothing. Why can’t u welcome an organization dat want to assist u,u are their laying force alligations, over something u did not not knw. PCN didnt force any one to pay the training fees,u no wht is good for you. Young Nigerian gratuate dat gratuated over many years, been at home helpless, because of frautuation went into halot, criminal, cultist and others,is dat what we want in this country? NO. Let peace corps of Nigeria be,to settle some of this problem we have for d nation. Amb. Dr Dickson Akoh, dnt worry, the good Lord is with u. U will be a victorious man soon. God Bless Nigeria.

  29. I wish the IGP should as well train good officers first before looking into affairs of peace corps. I was ashamed to see a police man on full uniform begging drivers for money + other crimes they commit. This is just as if they are trying to remove a piece of sand in the eyes of peace Corps where as their eyes are filled with logs of wood. If not for jealousy, I believe the police supposed to be happy for peace Corps instead of attacking. After all these struggles remember you are nothing no matter your position…. One day, you will realize that vanity upon vanity, all is vanity.

    1. Nigeria must be free from crime for peace to reign.therefore,NPF should change from their criminal ways and allow Peace Corps to be for our good as Nigerians.POLICE,una no get shame?

  30. Your comment..I see victory going d way of Dr.Amb. Dickson Akor led Nigerian Peace Corp. Our enemies have already failed. My NC, I admire ur dedication, determination n courage. The youths n Posterity shall remember you, sir. I salute you.

  31. Your comment..Peace corps is coming in to eradicate all error which police is also having hands into and to bring Peace and put smile on the face of all Nigerians youth ……Police nor any other can’t stop the Work of God….

  32. Are there not Nigerian Police Force in this Country Since 18 Years ago? while now that the Bill has been pass into Law by National Assembly? where were you, better keep quiet and respect yourself. Nobody false us to pay and we are not complaining Police Live us alone

  33. Trying to jeopardize the existence of Peace Corps for an irrelevant issue is totally not acceptable.
Nigeria have been undergoing multiple terrors and violents which the abhorrency or eventual cancellation of the NGO of PCN may cause Nigeria a great lost of Peace and Harmony.
I advice that cases should be withdrawn and PCN should be granted bail for the betterment of our country Nigeria….

    Elias

  34. God will be on Akor’s Side. Over 11 court cases agaist him and he won all, with millions of Naira awarded to him. I want to tell all Peace Corps Members that, nothing good comes easy and their light has come to shine. Let them be praying. Thanks.

  35. Police na your friend but police dey make their self enemy to nigerian youths no wahala when we start una go pay for waiting una dey do peace corp national commandant Dickson akor

  36. Your comment. The best thing police should have done was to investigate by intervening and asisting the PCN in re- screening those recruited, it is by so doing that they may know the truth of the allegation, now, where can they (the police) trace the said alledged recruited terrorist ? they would have got them easier had it been they went in to screen them.

  37. Your comment..I’m satisfy with the all the comments made so far. God bless Nigerian. soon things positive will happen.

  38. ANY BODY WHO DOESN’T WANT PEACE FOR PCN WIL NEVER kNOW PEACE. THEY WANT THE POOR TO REMAIN POOR FOR EVER BUT THE GOD WE WORSHIP IS NOT A SLEEPING ONE. HE WILL SEE US THROUGH OUR ENEMIES AND NEMESIS SHALL CATCH UP WITH THEM.. LONG LIVE PCN
    LONG LIVE AKOH
LONG LIVE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIAN

  42. you all comments should not be only on the security agencies but also on those so call themselves i no go gree two leaders of PCN and NUPEC who are fighting and don’t allow the youth to start the practice of Peace to the Nation,,,,,,,,,,,,no Unity are the course of the Police embarrassment.

  43. what is the president waiting for, is it the police dat will tell him wat to do in the country that he is heading ? now dat he is in London I don’t know when he will sign dat bill.
I don’t even know what is wrong with d police, what exactly are they afraid of?

  44. Your comment.. Police are just trying to cover their illicit act by stopping d establishment of npc. They 4got it’s too late to cry wen the head is off.

  45. WHY are you troubled (police).if you are doing the right thing befor you don’t need to trouble yourself by harrasing peace corp member.
you shouldn’t worry yourself bcos,he can make a way where there is no way.

    we NEED WINE NOT BLOOD
    WE NEED BREAD NOT BULLET
    WE NEED UNITY NOT WAR.
IT IS APPALLING WHAT THE POLICE MEN ARE DOING NOWADAYS.
