The police command in Plateau state has restricted movement in five LGAs ahead of the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
A statement issued on Friday by Alfred Alabo, the state’s police spokesperson, said the resolution was reached during a “strategic security meeting” with LG chairpersons in Jos, the state capital.
Alabo said the restriction would run from 6pm to 6am daily from December 23 to January 3, 2025, in Barkin Ladi, Bassa, Mangu, Riyom and Bokkos LGAs.
“The meeting was convened as part of the Commissioner’s proactive and strategic efforts at ensuring a peaceful atmosphere for the forthcoming Christmas and New Year celebration throughout the State, especially in the following Local Government Areas; Bassa, Barkin Ladi, Riyom, Bokkos and Mangu respectively,” the statement reads.

“The Plateau State Commissioner of Police has put in place effective security arrangements and made all necessary deployments to all the Seventeen (17) Local Government Areas to ensure that there are no threats to the peace currently being enjoyed in the State.”
The police also banned night activists, including grazing, farming, mining and operation of commercial motorcycles and pubs.
Alabo said the command has “made massive deployments to major flashpoints within the State, and is also working in synergy with the Military, other Security Agencies within the State and members of our security help groups to ensure that the security of our State and Borders is guaranteed throughout this festive period”.

“We want you to note that all of our policies are for the peace and security of all Plateau residents, and not meant to intimidate or inconvenience anyone,” he added.
Plateau has a history of gunmen attacks during festive periods.
On Christmas eve in 2024, over 115 persons were killed when armed men invaded communities in Bokkos, Mangu and Barkin-Ladi LGAs of the state.
