The police command in Osun state says six persons were killed in the violence that broke out at local government secretariats in the state on Monday.

Speaking in a video published on Tuesday, Yemisi Opalola, Osun police spokesperson, said more personnel have been deployed in the state to ensure peace and order.

Opalola cautioned residents that the police will not allow troublemakers to plunge the state into disorder.

She added that investigation will be conducted to ascertain those who perpetrated the violence and to ensure that justice is served.

“The incident left six people dead and many others hospitalised. Thank God those people are recuperating now at the hospital,” she said.

“The police command is not happy with what happened yesterday. Various groups had been called earlier for meetings.

“There had been a series of meetings by the Osun commissioner of police to ensure that the incident does not happen but unfortunately, it happened.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to those affected, including those who lost their lives and property.

“The CP assures the public of a thorough investigation and promises that the perpetrators will face the full weight of the law.”

On Monday, violence broke out at some LG secretariats in Osun state after a clash between supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and those of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Some persons were killed during the clash, including Remi Abbas, a former chairman of Irewole LGA.

The crisis in the state started following the judgment of the court of appeal on sacked council chairpersons and councillors.

The PDP claimed that the February 10 judgment of the court of appeal in Akure, Ondo state, did not reinstate the sacked chairpersons and councillors elected in 2022, while the APC insisted that they were reinstated.

Reacting to the violence, Ademola Adeleke, governor of the state, asked residents to stay away from local government secretariats and allow security agencies to protest the facilities.

The APC and PDP have traded blame over the cause of the violence.
