Police: Suspected herders killed farmer in Ondo community

The police command in Ondo says suspected herders have killed Joshua Gbolahan, an 18-year-old farmer, in Ifira Akoko, Akoko south-east LGA of the state.

The attack came one week after 36-year-old Sunday Ayeni was killed on his farm in Uba Oka, Akoko south-west LGA of the state.

Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the police spokesperson in Ondo, who confirmed the incident, said a suspect was arrested after a “quick dispatch of personnel to the area”.

Witnesses said Gbolahan’s body was found at Isua Akoko after he was allegedly hacked to death by unknown assailants on Tuesday.

Odunlami-Omisanya said police recovered the body and transferred it to Ipe Akoko General Hospital’s morgue on Wednesday.

Traditional rulers and community leaders in the community have held emergency meetings to address escalating violence in the LGA.

Victor Olasehinde, the Owa of Ogbagi Akoko and chairman of the Akoko divisional council of Obas, condemned the killings as “callous, wicked, and unacceptable”.

Olasehinde warned that the unchecked activities of herdsmen are driving farmers away from their fields, threatening the region’s status as a vital food basket for the state.

He called on the government and security agencies to intensify efforts to restore peace and security in Akoko, noting that continued neglect could have dire consequences for the community and beyond.
