The Anambra police command says it has commenced disciplinary proceedings against a police officer who assaulted a motorist in the state.
On Monday, a viral video of the officer assaulting a commercial tricyclist made the rounds on social media.
In the video, the police officer was seen slapping and hitting the victim with his gun.
In a statement on Tuesday, Tochukwu Ikenga, the police spokesperson in the state, condemned the act, describing it as “unprofessional”.

“Anambra state police command wishes to let the members of the public know that the police officers seen in a viral video assaulting a citizen have been identified and the commissioner of police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam has ordered immediate disciplinary proceedings to commence on the incident,” the statement reads.
Ikenga said the command has invited the victim to help facilitate the necessary procedures.

“Given the above, the command also invites the victim to come forward, to help in facilitating the necessary procedures involved in the process,” he said.
“To this end, the CP reiterated that the command under his watch would not tolerate any form of unprofessional conduct by police personnel and emphasized the need for officers to be courageously calm when dealing with the civil populace especially when being provoked.
“He also urges citizens to always respect the civil authority and be law-abiding.”
