The Gombe police command says over 100 suspects have been arrested for allegedly carrying Russian flags and engaging in vandalism during the #EndBadGovernance protest in the state.
The #EndBadGovernance protest commenced in many cities across the country on August 1, with protesters demanding an end to economic hardship and insecurity, among others, from the federal government.
In some parts of the country, the protests have led to widespread looting and vandalism of private and public properties.
The Gombe police spokesperson, Buhari Abdullahi, who addressed journalists on Wednesday, said the display of another country’s flag by protesters was disrespectful to the national symbols and amounted to a treasonable felony.
“On the 5th of August, we saw an unsettling display of foreign flags by some protesters,” Abdullahi said.
“This act is not only disrespectful to our national symbol but also a treasonable felony-related offence.
“Hence, 10 suspects were arrested flying Russian flags, and they are under investigation.
He added that the number of individuals in police custody has increased to 111, noting that some of them are facing allegations of violent behaviour and attacks on security operatives.
“The protests escalated in a violent manner and the attacks include the officers that are diligently maintaining public safety, leading to the serious injury to the police officers and damage to police patrol vehicles,” the police spokesperson said.
“The looting of both public and private property during these protests is a grave concern. For instance, Gombe State Revenue Tribunal, Bima Lodge, Gombe State Bureau for Public Service Reform, Nital Company, and Blue J Motors, among others.
“Such actions not only undermine the rule of law but also disrupt communities and harm businesses.”
Abdullahi assured members of the public of police protection and urged them to continue their daily activities without fear.
“We are committed to a measured response; we want to ensure that the rights of peaceful protesters are respected while addressing those who engage in violence or unlawful activities,” he added.
