Kayode Egbetokun, inspector-general of police, says the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) will soon establish a full drone system to address the country’s security challenges.

Egbetokun spoke on Monday while delivering a lecture at an event organised by the TETFUND Centre of Excellence in Multidisciplinary Studies (TCEMS).

The event took place at the Trenchard hall, University of Ibadan, Oyo state.

Egbetokun delivered a lecture titled: ‘The Nigeria Police Force and the Management of Internal Security’.

According to NAN, the IGP said although the force has drones, it would now establish a full drone system to capture everywhere in Nigeria from its headquarters in Abuja.

Egbetokun said the drone system will enable the police to detect criminals at crime scenes, adding that the “ungoverned spaces will soon become governed”.

The IGP said the force would establish a special intervention squad (SIS) in all the states of the federation to tackle kidnapping, banditry and other forms of criminality.

Egbetokun said the deployment of the SIS in Abuja had yielded results, leading to the arrest of many kidnappers and bandits.

The IGP said the force had also established dedicated anti-kidnapping units across various states to focus on intelligence gathering.

Egbetokun added that units had successfully conducted numerous rescue operations of kidnapped victims and the arrest of perpetrators.

The IGP said the shortage of manpower, inadequate equipment, public distrust, and insufficient budgetary provisions, are some of the challenges facing the police.

On his part, Kayode Adewale, the vice-chancellor of UI, commended the IGP for the “visionary leadership” in handling the country’s security challenges.
