Politics should be driven by ideology — not quest for power, says Toyin Falola

Toyin Falola

Toyin Falola, a professor of African history, says politics in Nigeria must be driven by sustainable ideologies rather than an unbridled quest for power.

Falola spoke on Tuesday during the ‘Professor Ayo Olukotun Memorial Lecture’ at the Lead University in Ibadan, Oyo state.

Olukotun, a professor of political science, died on January 4, 2023.

Eminent personalities like Olorunnimbe Mamora, former senator and chairperson of the event; Kabiru Adeyemo, vice chancellor of Lead City University; Oyebola Ayeni, registrar of Lead City University; and Igho Fayomi, chair of the organising committee; attended the lecture.

Speaking on the theme: ‘Ayo Olukotun and the Nigerian Nation’, the professor said political parties must have clear visions for national development instead of serving as a platform for power grab.

Falola said political parties created in the early days of Nigerian independence were anchored on strong ideological principles.

He mentioned that the Action Group (AG), led by Obafemi Awolowo, promoted the principles of regional autonomy, progressive policies, and economic modernisation.

The scholar added that the Northern People’s Congress (NPC), under the leadership of Ahmadu Bello, focused on traditional leadership and conservative governance, while the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC), under Nnamdi Azikiwe, championed nationalist aspirations and pan-African ideals.

The professor expressed concern over the current political realities, adding that there is a need to revert to foundational principles and quality ideologies of political parties.

“If the country will eventually transit from the current wilderness of deferred greatness to the world stage, it must get, among other things, its democratic governance right,” he said.

“Democracy without ideology is a race without a destination. Nigeria must not continue running in circles. It is time to lay the foundation for an ideology-driven future.”
