POLL: Do you think WASSCE should go ahead despite COVID-19?

The West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) earlier scheduled for April was postponed indefinitely because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

But as the lockdown which was imposed on countries was eased gradually, the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) fixed August 4 to September 5 for the examination.

The federal government had initially agreed that schools would partially resume to enable students in graduating classes participate in the examination.

But later on, Adamu Adamu, minister of education, told journalists that the decision to reopen schools had been reversed, adding that students of Federal Government Colleges would be exempted from participating in WASSCE for 2020.

He also appealed to state governments to consider not opening schools.

In neighbouring Ghana, 55 students and staff of a school contracted COVID-19 after partial reopening of schools.

More cases have been recorded across the continent, which currently has over 643,000 COVID-19 cases.

In Nigeria, the reversal on opening of schools has been followed by reactions and counter reactions, with the house of representatives calling for a review of the decision.

Governors have not taken a unified decision on the matter — although south-west states such as Lagos and Oyo have announced dates for resumption.

Are you in support of the decision of WAEC to go ahead the examination? Do you think this is unsafe for students and staff of participating schools? Should the examination be postponed? Let’s have your thoughts.

  1. Yes! If roads are opened, Airport are operating and Churches are functional with markets operating, the students destines should not be jeopardize. We should be fair to all.

  2. Your comment..Schools should be open while measures should be put in place to protect the health of the students and teachers. Also candidates for the WAEC exam should be allowed to write the exam considering the psychological effect the suspension of the exam may have on the students. Thanks.
