POLL: Should Buhari ban the hijab?

Following a series of suicide bombings by hijab-wearing Boko Haram militants, President Muhammadu Buhari said on Thursday that he would consider banning the Muslim apparel. His concerns, it would appear, are more about security than the religious implications.

Hijab, worn by Muslim women to conceal some attractive parts of their anatomy, has been a symbol of tussle between Muslims and non-Muslims in secular schools in the south-west, and Buhari’s statement appears to have touched a raw nerve yet again in a country where religious matters elicit the most sentiments.

Chad, a Muslim-majority country, banned hijab when suicide bombers started launching attacks wearing it, but there was no opposition from the Muslim leaders who were also more worried about security than religious obligations. But Chad does not have a history of religious acrimony, unlike Nigeria.
