The Vatican says Pope Francis died from a cerebral stroke and subsequent heart failure.
A death certificate published by the Vatican on Monday said the cerebral stroke led to a coma and irreversible heart failure.

Pope Francis suffered from a chronic lung disease and had one part of one of his lungs removed as a young man.

In his latter years of life, health issues plagued him.
He had been battling bilateral pneumonia and spent 38 days in hospital, the longest of his papacy.
Francis was discharged on March 23 but still moved around with much assistance.

On Easter Sunday, a day before his death, he made an appearance to bless thousands in St Peter’s Square.
World leaders have since poured tribute to honour the deceased head of the Catholic Church.
Several masses were also held across the world to mourn and eulogise the late Pope Francis/
He died aged 88.
