Poverty is a threat to human existence in Nigeria, says Catholic bishop

Ignatius Kaigama, bishop of Abuja Catholic diocese, says poverty is a serious threat to human existence in Nigeria.

Kaigama stated this on Sunday during a homily delivered at the lenten campaign of the Abuja archdiocese.

The Catholic bishop noted that many people have resorted to begging to survive, adding that “like coronavirus, poverty is menacing and threatening to our rights, values and entire existence”.

“Coronavirus pandemic aside, I too receive requests from many qualified but unemployed youths; requests to pay house rent; school fees, dowries, and even for funerals, as well as requests to buy cars,” he said.

“When you go to the periphery of our cities you see people who suffer the lack of basic infrastructure and worry so much about the safety of their lives and property.

“Youths are turned into beggars and some embrace crime or violence or other criminal activities. Pensioners sometimes regret their faithful service to their fatherland as they languish in poverty, especially during tough times like these.”

The Catholic bishop urged Nigerians to pray for those in authority to take concrete steps to address the nation’s security challenges, while also giving to the poor.

“We pray that our authorities will take more concrete and immediate measures to ensure a holistic national security. May God save us from all harm and help all Nigerians to live in peace and harmony,” he said.
