Prepaid meters available for sale from June 15, EEDC tells south-east residents

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) says it will commence the deployment of prepaid meters to its customers in the south-east from June 15.

In a statement on Tuesday, Chukwuemeka Ezeh, EEDC’s head of communications, urged the customers to take advantage of the meter asset providers (MAP) scheme and get metered within 10 days of paying for the meter.

The electricity company covers Enugu, Anambra, Imo, Ebonyi and Abia states as its franchise area.

On April 3, 2018, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) introduced the MAP regulation to new investors to fast-track the roll-out of meters through the engagement of third-party investors.

The scheme was designed to close the huge metering gap in the country and end estimated billing.

The commission had issued permits to meter service providers to begin the roll out of new meters by May 1.

Ezeh said the company has been working closely with its MAP, Mojec International Limited, to ensure that the experience is smooth and easy for its customers.

According to him, the meters will cost N36,991.50 and N67,055.85 for single phase and three phase respectively.

“For customers to get started, they are expected to visit the EEDC District Office in charge of their area from the 15th of June, 2019, to pick up the Meter application form,” he said.

“The forms which are serialised will be issued to customers free of charge and should not be photocopied, as the photocopied version will not be treated.

“It is important to reiterate that the meter application form is issued at no cost and customers should make payment to designated bank account that will be provided to them through the Demand Note, and they should not pay to any staff of the MAP or EEDC.”
