September 9 is the founding day of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (1948). By liberating Korea, President Kim Il Sung (1912-1994) laid the foundation for building an independent state. The birth of the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK) began with the liberation of the country from Japanese military occupation (1905-1945) in the first half of the last century.

With the ambition to regain the sovereignty of Korea, Kim Il Sung proposed to complete the work of national liberation by means of an armed struggle founded on its own strength. And he organized the Anti-Japanese People’s Guerrilla Army to declare war on imperialist Japan.

At the end of the hard armed struggle of more than 15 years, he triumphed over Japanese imperialism and liberated Korea on August 15, 1945 by facing the formidable enemy armed to the teeth and without being supported by a regular army. Thus, Japanese military rule has ended, and the way is opened for the building of a new homeland.Kim Il Sung advanced original state-building thought and theory and materialized to build a nation of the people.

Adhering to the independent position without allowing himself to be chained by pre-established theories and foreign experiences, he paved the way for the construction of a popular power called to defend and realize the interests of the popular masses of different social class, especially workers, peasants and intellectuals.

Based on the experience and tradition he had accumulated in establishing early revolutionary popular government in guerrilla bases during the time of the anti-Japanese armed struggle, he was quick to establish popular power after the liberation. Thus, the North Korean Provisional People’s Committee and the North Korean People’s Committee were formed in February 1946 and February 1947 respectively.

Finally, it was on September 9, 1948 that the DPRK was born.

Kim Il Sung has prepared a political, military and economic foundation to ensure the eternal prosperity of the DPRK.
Having early created the ideas of Juche which he made the guiding doctrine of the Republic, he was able to achieve the unity and cohesion of the working masses, thus ensuring the solidity of the political and ideological base of the Republic.

Invariably viewing the strengthening of the national defense potential as a major matter deciding the fate and future of the state, he invested in the development of the military and the defense industry as a priority. Without its great deeds in strengthening the national defense potential, it would be unimaginable that the Korean People’s Army would be perfectly prepared politically, ideologically, militarily and technically, and endowed with such a powerful capacity for action.

Fully aware of the value of an independent economy already from the start of nation-building, he proposed to build an independent national economy to tirelessly accomplish this task by rejecting the seduction and pressure of the powers. Thanks to its strong independent economy prepared by him, the DPRK has so far been able to remain invulnerable to all global economic fluctuations. The DPRK’s current vigorous progression is unthinkable without the solid foundations of this independent economy.
