VOX POP: What are your expectations from Buhari’s second year?

Mansur Ibrahim, TheCable’s social media manager, went round the city of Abuja to speak with people on their expectations from President Muhammadu Buhari as he starts his second year in office.

He asked questions on what people feel about Buhari’s first year in office; if they were disappointed or satisfied with his performance. He also found out if they will vote for him if he decides to run in 2019?

These are the five main questions he asked:

• Are your expectations the next three years different than they were before he was elected?
• In what ways has President Buhari impacted your life in the past one year?
• What would you like his priority to be in the next three years?
• Any disappointments in the last one year?
• If there’s one thing you could tell the President, what would it be?

And these are their responses.

ABDULLAHI AND PETER WANT ‘MORE EFFORTS’

“I know its not easy to rule people especially a country like Nigeria but I pray to God to give him more wisdom because I know he intends to work. The president should put in more efforts to what Nigerians really expects from him.”

USMAN WANTS CONCENTRATION ON ROADS

“For me as a driver, most of Nigerian roads are bad, they are bad. If he can fix the roads, at least 60% out of 100%, If he’s able to fix it, I beleive things will be okay.”

‘BUHARI HAS TURNED US INTO LAUGHING STOCK’

“As far as I’m concerned he has failed Nigerians, he has failed us.Some of us chased PDP away to make Buhari get there, but those who believed in PDP are now laughing at us, we have become laughing stocks. Those of us who came out openly to say that PDP government must go, Goodluck must go, today they are laughing at us.”

CHIMA WANTS AFFORDABLE FUEL

“President Buhari should focus on fuel, when fuel goes up, everything changes, but if fuel comes down, everything will be cheap and normal.”

NAFISAT’S FOCUS IS ELECTRICITY

“I want President Buhari’s priority in the next three years to be electricity, I think with steady electricity, everything will be okay.”

JAMES BELIEVES THE PRESIDENT IS DOING HIS BEST 

“I have not been disappointed, he’s working but we want to see the result of his work, whatever crime you commit, I think there’s a penalty that is accorded to it in our constitution and it should be followed to detail, nobody should be spared.”

NWOKEDI WANTS THE PRESIDENT TO BE MORE FLEXIBLE 

“President Buhari should be more of a leader, a leader is flexible, a leader is fluid, a leader is not high handed.
“The type of leader Nigeria needs is not the one that will unite them, not the type that would break them up by actions or inactions or by words, particularly the IPOB, Niger Delta and what have you. You don’t tell people off. When you neglect a people, they can create problems for you, today the government is fighting corruption, who knows what it would be fighting tomorrow?”

OLAWEPO WANTS THE GOVERNMENT TO FULFILL ITS PROMISES

“Before the end of this year, I’m hoping that the standard of living of an average Nigerian should improve, there would be amenities, sound transportation system, there would be electricity and jobs as they promised.”

MUSA BELIEVES THE PRESIDENT IS ON TRACK

“I think he’s doing his best, I have not seen any disappointment from him.”

“All the policies are okay, but more needs to be done about the economy, most especially the petroleum sector. Any decision he is taking in that area should be done with caution, because it affects the life of every Nigerian.”
